Start with the French or English school system
French-language public schools serving Dollard-des-Ormeaux are administered by the Centre de services scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys, commonly called the CSSMB. English-language public schools serving the West Island are administered by the Lester B. Pearson School Board, or LBPSB.
The property address determines the attendance area, but it does not determine whether a child is legally eligible for English-language public education in Quebec. Those are two separate checks.
Enter the complete address
For an English public school, use the LBPSB’s official Which School Do I Attend? tool. Enter the civic number and street, choose Dollard-des-Ormeaux as the municipality, and select the applicable school year, grade and program.
For a French public school, use the CSSMB’s official school directory and review the territory served by the appropriate school. Confirm the result with the CSSMB or the school when the property is close to a boundary.
Do not rely only on Google Maps, the postal code, the distance from the house or information copied from an older real estate listing.
Verify the program as well as the school
A school may offer several programs, and availability can differ by grade. Depending on the school, families may be considering English core, French immersion, bilingual programming or a specialized option.
Ask which school serves the address, whether the desired program is offered, whether admission is subject to available space and whether a transfer request would be required.
Confirm eligibility for English-language instruction
Living near an English school does not automatically make a child eligible to attend it. Eligibility is governed by Quebec’s language rules and can depend on the language of instruction received by the child, a sibling or a parent in Canada, along with other specific situations.
Families should review the Government of Quebec’s English-school eligibility information and contact the school board if they are uncertain.
Check transportation separately
Being assigned to a school does not necessarily mean that the child qualifies for school-bus transportation. Transportation can depend on distance, grade level, the designated school, program and transportation zone.
The LBPSB provides transportation information and eligibility tools. Families should also examine the walking route, busy intersections and actual bus-stop location rather than assuming transportation will be available.
Obtain confirmation before buying
School boundaries, programs, capacity and registration rules can change. If a particular school is an important reason for buying a property, contact the school or school authority directly with the full address, the child’s grade, the intended school year and the desired program.
Whenever possible, obtain the answer in writing. A real estate listing, seller or broker should not be treated as the final authority on school assignment.
My advice to Dollard buyers
- Verify the exact address using the official locator.
- Confirm the child’s language eligibility separately.
- Ask about the desired program and available space.
- Check transportation independently.
- Reconfirm the information directly before making the school a deciding factor.
A home can be close to several schools while officially being assigned to only one. Verifying the address early helps prevent an unwelcome surprise after an offer has been accepted.
